Getting Started! Volunteer Forms |
|
|
|
|
Volunteers are needed in so many areas - greeting visitors, leading tours, teaching children, helping with the trails and gardens, demonstrating 19th century skills, assisting with fund raisers and much, much more. To get started volunteering at Burritt, please Email the Volunteer Coordinator, or call 256-533-1365, and ask to have your email address added to our "Volunteer Opportunities" email alerts. Our Volunteer Interest form describes some of our volunteer positions, so please fill out the form and check the areas that sound interesting to you so we'll know a little more about what you're looking for. The Medical Release and Youth Questionnaire/Code of Conduct forms are for volunteers under the age of 18 (the medical form must be signed by a parent or guardian). All three forms may be either mailed to the address on the interest form, or may be dropped off on your next visit to Burritt. It's easy to get started, and we'd love to have you join us!
2013 Volunteer Opportunities
Summer Camp: Join us at Nature Rangers Camp as camp counselor for kids grades K-5, Mon thru Fri, for 6 weeks of camp this summer.
- DATES: June 3-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28, July 8-12, 15-19
- Mandatory camp counselor orientation (for new volunteers): Thursday, May 30, 3:30 - 4:30pm in the Burritt classroom.
Two camp counselor shifts are available each day (8:30am-2:30pm/1:45pm-5:30pm), or we'll work with your schedule. This is a great way for teens to earn service hours, for college students to gain early-childhood experience, or for teachers or teacher-wannabes to brush up on their skills for a week.
The Whimsical Woods characters: Would you like to join us as a The Whimsical Woods volunteer this spring and summer? If you enjoy dressing up in costumes, being outdoors, and working with kids, then you'll be a perfect fit for Whimsical Woods (now through Sept 2, 2013).
TWW volunteer shifts (4 hours each)
- Tues-Fri: 11:00am-3:00pm
- Saturday: 9:00am-1:00pm or 12:30-4:30pm
- Sunday: 12:30-4:30pm
Want to learn more about The Whimsical Woods before you volunteer? Call 256-533-1365 for more information.
City Lights & Stars: Our summer concert series dates are: May 24, June 14, July 5 & 26, August 16. Volunteers are needed to bartend, park, and serve dinners at each of the Friday night concerts.

Trail Clearing Volunteers
Are you a nature-lover who loves the peaceful solitude of a mountain hiking trail? Well, Burritt's trails are here for your hiking pleasure, but we need the help of volunteers like you to keep them clean and safe. We'd like to invite you to come up anytime during our normal business hours to help clear the trails while you hike. Remove invasive plants, fallen branches, and anything else that might get in the way of the safety and enjoyment of hikers. Bring your own gloves and tools, or call ahead and we'll have some waiting for you or your group. When you're done, please record your hours in the Welcome Center, or you can email them anytime to

SAFETY: Hiking and clearing the trails at Burritt is a great way to get outdoors, fit in a little exercise, enjoy the clean mountain air, and spend time with family and friends. However, safety is an important aspect of any outdoor activity, and the guidelines below will ensure your volunteer experience is a fun and safe one:
Stop in at the Welcome Center to let them know you're on the trails (Tues-Sun; closed Mon).

Delivery Crew Members Needed
One of the ways Burritt lets folks know what's happening on the mountain is through posters, calendars, and flyers. Posting these all over the valley is a daunting task, and we can't do it alone -- so we rely on volunteers to help us out. We're currently looking for a few new volunteers to join our Delivery Crew. Interested? If you spend time on the roads of Huntsville, Hampton Cove, or any surrounding areas and would enjoy stopping at local restaurants and businesses to drop off calendars and put up posters, then give us a call at 256-533-1365. |
