Title: Chair Caning: “Herringbone Pattern”

Description: Have fun weaving a chair or stool seat with flat reed or flat fiber while upcycling an old chair in this class that is perfect for beginning and intermediate weavers!  If you can count to three you can weave this pattern.  All you need is a sturdy chair or stool, with four dowels at the top of the seat. So, bring a chair or stool and create your own new masterpiece. Weaving materials and tools will be available in class. If you are unsure if a chair you have will work for this project, please reach out to us at 256-427-5196 and we will put you in contact with the instructor.

Please note: If you don’t have a chair to bring, please send us an email ( or give us a call at 256-427-5196 and we will arrange getting one for you.

Instructor:  Gwen Chafin learned to weave baskets and chair seat from her father, Jesse Thomason. She received three grants to study white oak basketry from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Her caning and chair seat weaving  were expanded by attending the John C Campbell Folkschool in North Carolina. There she was taught by Cliff Pair and Kathy Hayes  from Odenville, Alabama.  Gwen now teaches at the Campbell Folkschool and the Alabama  Folkschool at Camp McDowell. Gwen is a retired teacher and principal from Arab City Schools.  She and her husband, Don, operate Chafin’s Chair Caning in downtown Arab.
