Explore History: Native Americans of Alabama
Saturday, May 7th
10:00 – 4:00
Come explore the history and culture of the Native Americans of Alabama. You will enjoy discovering which tribes lived in Alabama when settlers moved here, watching American Indian artisans as they demonstrate their traditional crafts, and hearing the stories of some of the specific Cherokee families that lived in our area. Be sure to experience the interactive timeline of the Trail of Tears (10:30, 12:30, 2:30), see Cherokee masks and other artifacts and find out their uses, and learn about Sequoyah and the syllabary (written Cherokee language) that he invented. Children will enjoy making their own souvenir masks and a traditional Native American game at our kids’ crafts tables.
