Deadline to Register: March 5th at 5:00pm
Fiber Arts: Knitting a Barley Hat
This is Part 2 of our Introduction to Knitting series. Join us for a 2-day class as we learn to knit in the round and create the Barley Hat. On Day 1 we will start with a quick refresher of casting on, knitting, and purling. We will then cast on in the round, create ribbing, change needles, and establish the pattern for the body of the hat. Over our 2-week break, students will complete the body of the Barley Hat at home. When we meet again on Day 2, there will be time for trouble shooting before learning to decrease, work on double pointed needles, and bind off. Students will leave Day 2 with a competed Barley Hat.
For those of you who have attended Part 1 of Introduction to Knitting at the Folk School making either dish cloths or the Wheat Scarf, you have all the skills needed to move into part 2 with the Barley Hat. For students who are new to knitting at The Folk School, a working understanding of how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off is required for this class. Don’t have those skills down? Please join us for Introduction to Knitting 1 the next time it is offered.
Please note: This is a two day class held on two Friday evenings (March 12th and March 26th). Some knitting experience is required.
Our local yarn store, Fiber Artwork, is curating supply kits with the following items:
The Barley Hat pattern is part of The Simple Collection by Tin Can Knits. The Simple Collection is created for sharing. These patterns are provided as free PDFs along with easy to follow online tutorials making this resource perfect for new knitters building skills and confidence.
Instructor: Katie Van Houten of Flint River Knitwear taught herself how to knit almost 20 years ago while on bed rest with her oldest child. Since then, she has expanded her craft into knitting lace, cables, and stranded color work in shawls, hats, socks, and sweaters. Katie is most proud of the garments that she has test knit as part of the design process for local Huntsville knitwear designer Knitosophy. Check out some of her finished work on Instagram @flintriverknitwear.
