One of America’s favorite authors ended the year and a long-standing gig with a national shout-out to one of Huntsville’s favorite bands: Microwave Dave & the Nukes. Stephen King, of “The Shining” and “The Stand” fame, capped a seven-year streak of columns on pop culture in the magazine Entertainment Weekly with a few things he’d still like to praise. “I want to beg you to go to YouTube and check out Microwave Dave & the Nukes,” King wrote, “blasting ‘Highway 49’ at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Ala. That electric slide guitar will change your way of life.” “I’m kind of stunned,” electric slide guitarist Dave Gallaher said Friday. “I don’t know what to say.” Gallaher said the band first recorded the song “Highway 49” in 2003 on its album “Atomic Electric.”
“It was our concert closer,” Gallaher said. “Something we played a lot, and people have always liked it.” Gallaher said “it’s really nice for somebody way up in the world of entertainment to find the value in our work. That’s gratifying.”
