Nature Studies: Gardening for the Birds

May 22 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Deadline to Register: May 15th at 5:00pm

Title: Nature Studies: “Gardening for the Birds”

Description: This workshop will have two parts. The first is a presentation that illustrates the benefits and rewards of gardening for the birds in a small or large backyard garden. Techniques for establishing an aesthetically pleasing backyard while developing a wildlife habitat to attract a wide variety of birds are presented with personal photographs of the garden design and the birds attracted to Herb’s garden environment. He will illustrate methods for feeding, providing shelter, housing and incorporating water features into the garden habitat. Participants will increase their understanding of the basic elements and methods for creating their own backyard wildlife habitat, in order to experience the enjoyment and benefits to be derived by expanding their vision for backyard gardening. After the presentation, the group will follow Herb on a walk around Burritt to view the different birds in our area. You may bring your own binoculars if you choose, but they are not required.

Instructor:  Since retiring, Herb Lewis has focused his personal hobbies of landscaping, birding and photography into creating a natural wildlife habitat within his backyard garden primarily to attract birds. He in turn gives
presentations to various groups sharing his experiences. He is an Honorary Master Gardener and has been an
instructor for the Master Gardener program and for the annual Alabama Audubon Mountain Workshops. He is
a volunteer docent and shuttle driver at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Herb and his wife Terry sponsored
and helped develop the Lewis Birding Trail at the Huntsville Botanical Garden.
