Title: Woodworking: “Front Porch Farm Stand and Sign”

Description:  Lindsey Boothe’s Front Porch Farm Stand initiative is making news. Want to be a part of her growing initiative to create “a gathering place for people and provisions?” Spend a day with Lindsey and pyrography artist, Lauren Concepcion, building your very own front porch farm stand and sign burned by you!

In the morning, you will be assembling Alabama Treenware‘s Front Porch Farm Stand from the ground up. Students will learn assembly skills, the history of the front porch, and how to properly run their Stand. After lunch, Lauren of LC Pyrography and Design will lead you through the techniques of wood-burning and you will create your own sign to accompany your Stand. You will also learn how to use and care for a burner and learn her step by step process for each project. Students will leave this workshop with a fully assembled Stand, complete with 9 half-bushel baskets, their own hand-burned sign, and all the knowledge needed to create “a place to meet together and share the fruits of your labor with one another.”

Please note: This workshop requires some hand strength and a vehicle large enough to transport your Stand home after the workshop is completed. The assembled Stand is approximately 48″H x 39″W x 16″D.

Instructors:  Lindsey Boothe is a lifelong resident of Appalachia and has been a traditional spoon carver for most of her adult life. “I have a deep passion for my Appalachian heritage and for the people here. A lot of that has to do with the strong communities you’ll find throughout the region. I am working to bring those back. As a society, we’ve become so busy and guarded that we have lost one of the most salient pieces of our communities- the front porch visit. Front Porch Farm Stand is a place to meet together and share the fruits of your labor with one another. It is a place to build a strong community. It is, quite literally, a gathering place for people and provisions.” You can see and shop Lindsey’s wares by visiting  Alabama Treenware. You can learn more about her Front Porch Farm Stand initiative here and follow Alabama Treenware and her initiative on Instagram.

Originally a psychology graduate, with the intent on studying landscape architecture, Lauren Concepcion has explored many creative paths. Getting her start about 6 years ago, all these paths eventually morphed and converged into something entirely different: wood-burning. Being a drawer and maker of things all her life, Lauren believes in filling our environments with thoughtful and meaningful pieces; that hand-made items are special, purposeful and invaluable. She hopes to share this belief, along with the reawakening of this forgotten technique, with others. Lauren Concepcion is a self-taught pyrographer and owner of her local pyrography business, LC Pyrography & Design. You can also find Lauren on Instagram and Facebook.

Supplies and Attire: All materials and equipment are provided. Some hand strength is needed. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes. Clothing should be comfortable. No long sleeves or fabric that cannot be rolled up or moved out of the way of the pen while burning. Please have a means of transporting your completed project home.
