SUMMARY:Ceramics: "Beginning Pottery Wheel Series"
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: April 22nd at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Beginning Pottery Wheel Series” \nDescription:  Pottery making is an ancient craft and art\, with the first wheel-thrown pottery made thousands of years ago to create utilitarian and artistic vessels. Over the course of this 4 week class\, using a modern electric pottery wheel\, you will learn the time-tested basics of shaping clay\, as your instructor guides you through the essential steps of creating a wheel-thrown vessel.  After making your form (bowl\, cup\, etc)\, it will be bisque-fired\, and you will then apply a glaze of the color of your choice. Be prepared to get muddy as you make your very own unique wheel-thrown creation. \n*There are many variables during the drying and firing process\, and pieces can crack or even explode. While we make every effort to ensure your work will be a success\, these variables make it impossible to guarantee your work will survive but this is the life of a potter. \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website\, Nascent Pottery. \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Students should wear close-toed shoes. \nTime: Saturday\, April 25 (1:00-5:00)\, Saturday May 2nd (1:00-5:00)\, Saturday May 9th (1:00-5:00)\, Saturday May 16th (1-5) \nTuition: $200.00 \nSupply Fee: $30.00 \nLevel: Beginner/Adv. Beginner \n~~~~~~ \nImportant Information: Registering for a workshop indicates that the student is 19 years of age or older and understands that photographs/video may be taken during the event and their image may be used on Burritt on the Mountain’s website and social media outlets or other promotional materials. Registration also indicates that the student releases Burritt on the Mountain and the City of Huntsville\, all their directors\, employees\, volunteers\, and any persons associated with Burritt on the Mountain\, from any liability for any bodily injury and/or property damage suffered by the attendee as a result of activities during the educational program.  Registration also includes free admission to the park. \nCancelation Policy:  Our workshops take a great deal of advance planning and purchasing of supplies. 25% of all ticket purchases are a non-refundable deposit. Students that cancel 30 days or more prior to the date of the class will be eligible for a refund\, minus the non-refundable deposit. If a cancellation is requested 14 to 29 days from a class date\, a refund of half the total price can be issued. No refunds will be issued less than 14 days from the start date of a class.*  To be fair and consistent\, there can be no exceptions to this policy\, regardless for the reason a cancelation is requested. \nThank you for understanding that this policy is in place to protect our artist instructors who spend time\, energy\, and money to create an amazing learning experience.  \n*We require a minimum number of students to hold a class. If this minimum is not met\, the class may be canceled or rescheduled. In this case\, a full refund will be offered.

SUMMARY:Historic Park Architectural Tour
DESCRIPTION:May is Preservation Month\, and there is no better time to take a closer look at the buildings that define Burritt’s Historic Park. \nJoin us for special Architectural Tours that go beyond the surface to explore how these structures were built\, how they were used\, and why they matter today. From hand-hewn logs and original construction techniques to the stories of the people who lived and worked in these spaces\, these tours offer a deeper understanding of everyday life in 19th-century North Alabama. \nBurritt on the Mountain is home to six 19th century historic houses and the distinctive 1938 Burritt Mansion\, representing five unique architectural styles. Among them\, the Dogtrot reflects a traditional Southern design\, the Hall-and-Parlor style traces its roots to medieval England\, and the Saddlebag house type stems from Scotch Irish origins. Spend a few hours with us exploring the details that make each structure truly one of a kind. \nWe will gather at the Welcome Center to begin our tour. While there are benches in the park\, this will be mostly a walk-and-talk event\, so wear comfortable shoes. \nTours are included with General Admission or your Burritt Membership. Spots are limited\, so be sure to plan ahead and RSVP to reserve your spot.
