On February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day was celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhog Day is a day to take everything a little less seriously and break up the winter monotony. Celebrate this tradition at Burritt on the Mountain with Alabama’s true weather forecasting groundhog Smith Lake Jake. According to legend, if Smith Lake Jake sees his shadow, he’ll return to his den and winter will continue for another six weeks. If he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will arrive early. Celebration includes live music, hot cocoa, cookies and groundhog themed crafts.
