DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: October 31st at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Slab Dish” \nDescription: The slab technique is a simple concept that has infinite possibilities and can be used to make a variety of types of pottery from functional pieces like serving dishes or vases to artistic centerpieces or wall sculptures. Bring your imagination and see what you can create! Students will return to glaze their pieces on November 22nd.  (If you are unable to return on that date\, your instructor can apply the glaze of your choosing.) \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. The distinctive face jugs of the American south originated in the early 1800s\, developed from African art forms\, and served multiple purposes from practical (carrying water or other liquids) to spiritual (serving as grave markers) to self-identification. In this class\, you will carry on this tradition by creating your own distinctive face vessel using pre-made wheel-thrown mug forms. SUMMARY:Ceramics: Intro to Wheel Throwing
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: November 7th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Introduction to Wheel Throwing” \nDescription:  This beginner wheel-throwing workshop will cover the basics of shaping clay using an electric pottery wheel. Your instructor will guide you through the essential steps of creating a wheel-thrown vessel. Each student will create one or two pieces to be fired and glazed. Students will return on Sunday\, November 22 to glaze their fired pieces. They will be fired one more time and ready for pick-up the following week. (If you are not able to return to glaze your pieces\, your instructor can apply the glaze of your choice.) \nPlease keep in mind that throwing on the pottery wheel is a skill that can take many years to master. This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty and see what wheel throwing is all about. This is a great class for someone who has never tried a wheel or for students who have taken our “Test Drive” class and want to progress even more. Participants will have the option to keep one to two of your creations to be fired and glazed. \n*There are many variables during the drying and firing process and pieces can crack or even explode.
