SUMMARY:Ceramics: Face Jugs and Mugs
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: August 8th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Face Jugs and Mugs” \nDescription: As a traditional pottery form\, face jugs have a long history\, from pre-Columbian America\, ancient Greece\, and medieval Europe\, as well as Africa. The distinctive face jugs of the American south originated in the early 1800s\, developed from African art forms\, and served multiple purposes from practical (carrying water or other liquids) to spiritual (serving as grave markers) to self-identification. In this class\, you will carry on this tradition by creating your own distinctive face vessel using pre-made wheel-thrown mug forms. No prior experience is needed in working with clay.  We will have a glazing session on Sunday September 6th. \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website\, Nascent Pottery. \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Students should wear close-toed shoes. \nTime: Saturday\, August 15th (1:00-4:00) and Glazing Session Sunday\, September 6 (1:00-3:00) \nTuition: $85.00 \nSupply Fee: $20.00 \nLevel: All Levels \n~~~~~~ \nImportant Information: Registering for a workshop indicates that the student is 19 years of age or older and understands that photographs/video may be taken during the event and their image may be used on Burritt on the Mountain’s website and social media outlets or other promotional materials. Registration also indicates that the student releases Burritt on the Mountain and the City of Huntsville\, all their directors\, employees\, volunteers\, and any persons associated with Burritt on the Mountain\, from any liability for any bodily injury and/or property damage suffered by the attendee as a result of actives during the educational program. \nCancelation Policy:  Our workshops take a great deal of advance planning and purchasing of supplies. 25% of all ticket purchases are a non-refundable deposit. Students that cancel 30 days or more prior to the date of the class will be eligible for a refund\, minus the non-refundable deposit. If a cancellation is requested 14 to 29 days from a class date\, a refund of half the total price can be issued. No refunds will be issued less than 14 days from the start date of a class.*  To be fair and consistent\, there can be no exceptions to this policy\, regardless for the reason a cancelation is requested. \nThank you for understanding that this policy is in place to protect our artist instructors who spend time\, energy\, and money to create an amazing learning experience.  \n*We require a minimum number of students to hold a class. If this minimum is not met\, the class may be canceled or rescheduled. In this case\, a full refund will be offered.

You will be making a 6×6 project to display or hang in your home.  We’ll walk you through each step\, giving you tricks and tips on how to use our glass fusing materials and tools along the way. Once completed the projects will be fired and ready for pick-up the following week. \nInstructor: Cate Woodall is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University with a visual arts degree specializing in ceramics. She has taught hand-building clay and pottery painting classes as well as glass fusing for several years.
