The class will focus on hammer control using full\, and half face blows\, to taper\, draw\, bend\, and rivet. \nPlease note: There will be a lunch break of approximately one hour. Please bring a lunch from home or plan to drive a short distance and return within an hour. \nInstructor: Al Stephens has recently retired having been a professional blacksmithing since 1992. He is a member of the Athens Forge chapter of the Alabama Forge Council. Al has taught classes for Burritt on the Mountain and Athens State University and demonstrated at local blacksmithing meetings. He is a member of the Alabama Forge Council. We will then use these skills to learn how to play a simple Irish reel. \nInstructor: Andy Kruspe is the owner and operator of The Irish Drum Center at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment as well as a teacher and performer of the bodhran (Irish traditional frame drum). Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. DESCRIPTION:Spring Farm Day 2026 \nApril 18th | 10am – 4pm \n\nJoin us for a taste of springtime on the farm Saturday\, April 18th 10am-4pm. Visit our barnyard animals\, experience historic skills\, and learn about life on the farm during the 1800s. Visitors will be fascinated by the sheep-shearing and blacksmithing demonstrations. Learn how to card and wash wool\, observe wool being spun into yarn\, create an animal mask\, and play with old-fashioned toys. \nYou will leave with a new appreciation for modern conveniences after trying historic tasks such as rug beating\, butter churning\, and mattress stuffing! Listen to musicians throughout the park play traditional instruments and music enjoyed during our Alabama beginnings. \nFamilies can also participate in Burritt’s We the People activities for children ages 4-12 and learn about the original families that lived in our historic homes. \nRegular Burritt admissions rates apply\, and this event is free to Burritt Members.
