DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: June 14th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Textile Arts: “Folded Bark Baskets” \nDescription: In this class\, each student will begin with a four foot section of poplar log. They will be instructed in how to remove\, fold and begin to dry a piece of bark. They will take this unfinished basket and other supplies home to complete on their own later after drying. Next\, students will be provided a preform basket and construct a basket (attach handle\, rim supports\, etc.)\, and have the opportunity to add various embellishments. Each student will take home both their completed basket and the folded/drying bark to complete at home. \nInstructor: Andrew Lee is a professional educator with over two decades of teaching experience. His fascination with history began by finding Native American artifacts in Northwest Georgia as a young boy. He credits this time in his life as crucial in developing a deep interest in understanding past cultures. While at the University of Georgia\, Andrew met master primitive skills instructor Scott Jones. After taking Jones’ flintknapping class\, the fuse was officially lit. More than twenty years later\, through teaching in elementary and middle schools as well as in the correctional setting\, the constant passion in Andrew’s educational life has been pursuing history\, including learning more about primitive skills. His hands-on workshops and the bark baskets & stone-bladed knives that he creates are ways that he expresses this love of history and nature. He teaches workshops at various locations around the southeast including John C. Campbell Folk School in western North Carolina and Foxfire in Northeast Georgia. \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Previous glass cutting experience required! \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Karen Reed. Karen Reed (Earthstar Glass) has been an art glass professional for over 40 years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. Students are encouraged to bring previous textile projects to embellish\, as well as using their new skills to create something entirely new! Please note:  Students will take home their supplies which will include the following:  Embroidery hoop\, needles\, embroidery floss\, fabric\, fabric marker\, scissors\, beads\, sequins \nThis is a sample of the instructor’s work that showcases the skills that will be taught in this class. \nInstructor: Dezzy Moon is an artist based in Huntsville\, Alabama. She graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2020. In printmaking\, she works primarily with screen print and woodblock. She is also dabbles in many crafts\, especially textiles. Whether you prefer bold patterns\, delicate motifs\, or freehand illustrations\, sgraffito allows for endless creative possibilities! \nNo prior experience is necessary—this class is perfect for beginners and experienced ceramicists alike. All materials\, tools\, and firing services are included. Come ready to get your hands dirty and leave with a one-of-a-kind ceramic piece! \nInstructor: Jessica Johnson “I am a Wife\, Mother\, Artist\, Educator and Athlete. I have a one-and-a-half-year-old who helps me see the world anew. I am married to an artist\, who is also a high school art educator. I am an active member of the Alabama Women’s Caucus for the Arts and have had my work exhibited around the South.  I am Captain of the Dixie Derby Girls\, Huntsville’s Flat Track Roller Derby Team.  Regarding teaching\, I have been an educator with Huntsville City School since 2011. I have taught the following courses over the years: Art I\, Drawing I/II\, Photo I/II\, Painting I/II\, AP Studio Art 2-D design\, AP Drawing\, Ceramic I/II\, Magnet II and Magnet IV. I currently teach Ceramic I and Ceramic II and have been doing so for a few years now. During my undergraduate and graduate degree at UAB I completed a concentration in Ceramics\, Painting and Photography. I love art and sharing the knowledge I have acquired over the years. DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: September 27th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Face Mug” \nDescription: Face jugs have a long tradition\, with examples found from ancient Greece and Egypt. In the southern United States\, the first examples date to the mid-1800’s and were crafted by enslaved African American potters who created these unique pieces for various purposes. The term ugly jugs was first used in the early 1900’s. Styles of face jugs range from realistic to highly fantastical. In this class you’ll be provided with a basic wheel-thrown mug to decorate using hand-building techniques to create a face that is uniquely yours! Please note:  After class\, the mugs/jugs will be fired in our kiln. There will be a glazing session on Sunday\, June 8th at 1:00 pm. Mugs/jugs will be fired once more after glazing and ready for pick-up within a week. \n  \n  \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Paul Wieland. Paul has been teaching ceramics at Burritt since we opened our pottery studio in 2020. He was also instrumental in the design and outfitting of the studio. He has making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. Paul studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website\, Nascent Pottery. \n \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. The class will focus on hammer control using full\, and half face blows\, to taper\, draw\, bend\, and rivet. \nPlease note: There will be a lunch break of approximately one hour. Please bring a lunch from home or plan to drive a short distance and return within an hour. \nInstructor: Al Stephens has recently retired having been a professional blacksmithing since 1992. He is a member of the Athens Forge chapter of the Alabama Forge Council. Al has taught classes for Burritt on the Mountain and Athens State University and demonstrated at local blacksmithing meetings. He is a member of the Alabama Forge Council. DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: May 17th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Glass: “Folk Art Stained Glass Windchime” \nDescription:  This is a lovely stained glass project that is fun to make.  The very gentle sound of the chimes will delight you for years to come. Beginners are welcome. There is fine detail work involved. \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Karen Reed. Karen Reed (Earthstar Glass) has been an art glass professional for over 40 years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Arrowmont School for Arts & Crafts and The Appalachian Center for Craft. She had been at Burritt Folk School for the last six years. Join us to make a wreath from locally harvested kudzu. Weather permitting\, students will forage for plants on Burritt’s trails and use these plants to craft a lovely wreath that reflects the changing season. Please note: This class will require walking on uneven paths in the outdoors. \nInstructor:  Beth Phillips says “I weave lighting\, sculptures and basketry using whole and split Kudzu vines. I also make paper from the leaves\, and I recently learned the ancient process of extracting the fiber from the vines to weave cloth and am excitedly pursuing that side of creating with kudzu at present. Images and examples of my more recent work can be seen on my social media pages on FB and IG @kudzumama. With the invasive nature of kudzu such an environmental and ecological issue in the South\, I love the opportunity to share all the wonderful uses and products that can be derived from such a maligned vine.” \nSupplies and Attire: All supplies will be provided. DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 32nd Season of the City Lights & Stars Concert Series at Burritt on the Mountain \nKUSH  |  May 9th \nGates Open at 6:00 pm. Concert begins at 7:30 pm. \nKUSH is a Caribbean-centered band from Huntsville\, Alabama led by Arnold Corbin\, also known as Bert. \nThe name KUSH comes from an ancient African empire. Many artists have influenced KUSH. Reggae ambassador Bob Marley’s influence is quite evident in the “Roots\,” while artists such as Sean Paul and Beenie Man have influenced the band’s more hard-hitting “Dance Hall” styles. The group also receives inspiration from the many “Calypso” and “Soca” artists. Kush’s mainstream influences include Sade\, Bob Dylan\, and Santana to name a few. KUSH has performed at multiple venues throughout the Southeast. \nBring your chair\, blanket and picnic to enjoy the evening. Food trucks will be onsite with food & dessert available for purchase.
