Using the forge\, anvil\, and basic hand tools students will learn tapering\, spreading\, scrolling\, bending\, and riveting as they make a letter opener. \nInstructor: Al Stephens has recently retired having been a professional blacksmithing since 1992. He is a member of the Athens Forge chapter of the Alabama Forge Council. Al has taught classes for Burritt on the Mountain and Athens State University and demonstrated at local blacksmithing meetings. He is a member of the Alabama Forge Council. There are lots of details and decorations that will make this tree unique\, special and festive! \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Karen Reed. Karen Reed (Earthstar Glass) has been an art glass professional for over 40 years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. Participants will learn the basics of fiber preparation\, safe dye handling\, and simple techniques for applying color to yarn. With clear\, step-by-step instruction\, students will gain the confidence to create their own one-of-a-kind skeins using beginner-friendly materials. \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local weaver Emily Wallace. Emily has been teaching weaving\, spinning\, and other fiber arts to the public for  over 10 years. She previously owned a yarn shop in Hartselle\, AL and has taught various workshops at several yarn shops and studios. She  currently has a weaving studio at Lowe Mill Arts (studio #311) where she teaches and sells handwoven items. In this class\, students will learn how to create a stunning\, long-lasting holiday mailbox decoration using fresh greenery foraged from their own backyards. Weather permitting at the end of the class we will take an optional walk around the museum grounds to point out types of appropriate greenery to add to your own mailbox decor. \nEach participant will receive: \n\nA sturdy arrangement base\nA 3-foot length of festive ribbon to make your bow in class\nA curated list of long-lasting natural materials ideal for foraging\nStep-by-step instructions for assembling a decoration on your home mailbox.\n\nThis class is perfect for anyone who loves crafting\, decorating\, or simply wants to add a personal\, nature-inspired touch to their holiday décor. You’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to build your own mailbox decoration at home—just in time for the season! \nInstructor: Beth Phillips says “I weave lighting\, sculptures and basketry using whole and split Kudzu vines. I also make paper from the leaves\, and I recently learned the ancient process of extracting the fiber from the vines to weave cloth and am excitedly pursuing that side of creating with kudzu at present. DESCRIPTION:Sanders Family Christmas Play in the Old Country Church \nproduced by Southern Rogue Theatre Company \nPerformance: Wednesday\, December 21st at 2:30 p.m. \nThe Sanders Family is back at Burritt this December. Southern Rogue Theatre Company and Burritt on the Mountain pair together to bring this hilarious musical favorite to the community. Conceived by Alan Bailey and penned by Connie Ray\, this famous sequel of Smoke on the Mountain returns to the Old Country Church at Burritt on the Mountain. \nWe’ll return to Mount Pleasant\, North Carolina\, on Christmas Eve of 1941. Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders to the Baptist Church to sing and witness\, thereby getting the congregation into the down-home holiday spirit before the boys\, including one of the Sanders’ own\, ship off to World War II. The congregation will hear more than two-dozen Christmas carols\, many of them vintage hymns\, and hilarious yuletide stories from the more or less devout Sanders family members. This class is great for all skill levels\, even if you have never picked up a paint-brush\, the point is to come and relax for a bit while creating something special! \nInstructor: Your instructor\, Lynn Lawrence\, has been painting since she was 7 years old. This class is great for all skill levels\, even if you have never picked up a paint-brush\, the point is to come and relax for a bit while creating something special! \nInstructor: Your instructor\, Lynn Lawrence\, has been painting since she was 7 years old. She started watercolor painting under the tutelage of her aunt\, Ruth Brown\, a well-known Alabama watercolorist.  She went on to compete in high school\, in a variety of media\, and was offered a scholarship to the Art Institute of Atlanta. Will take a short walk around the park to identify some birds. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. \n11:15\, Noon\, 1:00\, and 3:00 Caring for Chickens  \nVisit the Burritt Barnyard to view a chicken habitat and meet and feed the chickens. Learn what it takes to create your own flock of egg layers. The eggs laid at Burritt are sold in Josie’s gift shop. \nTommy Howell Bird Encounter Nature Program   1:30-2:30pm Meet in the Church             \nCome enjoy Tommy’s “Beauties from the Sky” program.
