SUMMARY:Ceramics: "Introduction to Wheel Throwing"
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: April 19th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Introduction to Wheel Throwing” \nDescription:  This beginner wheel throwing workshop will cover the basics of shaping clay using an electric pottery wheel. Your instructor will guide you through the essential steps of creating a wheel thrown vessel. Each student will create one or two pieces to be fired and glazed. Students will return on Sunday\, June 2nd to glaze their fired pieces. They will be fired one more time and ready for pick up the following week. \nPlease keep in mind that throwing on the pottery wheel is a skill that can take many years to master. This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty and see what wheel throwing is all about. This is a great class for someone who had never tried a wheel or for students who have taken our “Test Drive” class and want to progress even more. Participants will have the option to keep one to two of your creations to be fired and glazed. \n*There are many variables during the drying and firing process and pieces can crack or even explode. While we make every effort to ensure your work will be a success\, these variables make it impossible to guarantee your work will survive\, but thus is the life of a potter. \n  \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He  has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website\, Nascent Pottery. \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Students should wear close-toed shoes. \nTime: Saturday\, April 26th (9:00am-1:00pm) and Sunday\, May 4th (1:00-3:00) \nTuition: $90.00 \nSupply Fee: $20.00 \nLevel: Beginner/Adv. SUMMARY:Mansion Exhibit - History Lives On: Preserving Alabama’s Rosenwald Schools
DESCRIPTION:MANSION EXHIBIT\nHistory Lives On: Preserving Alabama’s Rosenwald Schools \nBurritt Museum is proud to announce that History Lives On: Preserving Alabama’s Rosenwald Schools will be the Spring 2025 exhibit in the Burritt Mansion. The exhibit is on loan from Auburn University’s College of Architecture\, Design and Construction who partnered with the Alabama Department of Archives to study the partnership between Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington and the importance of what these men accomplished. The exhibit also focuses on the local communities and their roles in raising funds to support these educational projects. \nIn the early part of the 20th century\, the Rosenwald School Program\, ending in 1932\, constructed over 5\,000 schools for 600\,000 students throughout 15 states. The goal was to improve education for rural African American children in the South by offering basic education in a clean\, healthy environment and teaching industrial and home economics classes. Rosenwald Schools ensured the opportunity for a better future for many rural children. \nHistory Lives On: Preserving Alabama’s Rosenwald Schools exhibit will open on January 28th and run through May. This exhibit is included with general admission to Burritt. \n
