She has taught hand-building clay and pottery painting classes as well as glass fusing for several years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for: International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Arrowmont School for Arts & Crafts and The Appalachian Center for Craft. She had been at Burritt Folk School for the last six years. Learn how to transform recycled paper pulp into beautiful\, one-of-a-kind sheets that can be used for cards\, journals\, bookmarks\, and more. Students will explore basic papermaking techniques\, add natural fibers and decorative elements\, and leave with their own handmade creations. \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local weaver and leathercrafter Emily Wallace. Emily has been teaching weaving\, spinning\, and other fiber arts to the public for over 10 years\, with more recent experience in leather crafting. She previously owned a yarn shop in Hartselle\, AL and has taught a wide range of workshops at yarn shops and studios. SUMMARY:Ceramics: Face Mugs
DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: August 8th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Face Mugs” \nDescription: As a traditional pottery form\, face jugs have a long history\, from pre-Columbian America\, ancient Greece\, and medieval Europe\, as well as Africa. The distinctive face jugs of the American south originated in the early 1800s\, developed from African art forms\, and served multiple purposes from practical (carrying water or other liquids) to spiritual (serving as grave markers) to self-identification. In this class\, you will carry on this tradition by creating your own distinctive face vessel using pre-made wheel-thrown mug forms. No prior experience is needed in working with clay.  We will have a glazing session on Sunday September 6th. \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website\, Nascent Pottery. \n Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided.
