DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: November 4th\, 2025 at 5:00pm \nWorkshop: Weekday Series: “Letter Opener” \nDescription: This class will focus on several basic forging fundamentals. Using the forge\, anvil\, and basic hand tools students will learn tapering\, spreading\, scrolling\, bending\, and riveting as they make a letter opener. \nInstructor: Al Stephens has recently retired having been a professional blacksmithing since 1992. He is a member of the Athens Forge chapter of the Alabama Forge Council. Al has taught classes for Burritt on the Mountain and Athens State University and demonstrated at local blacksmithing meetings. He is a member of the Alabama Forge Council. There are lots of details and decorations that will make this tree unique\, special and festive! \n  \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Karen Reed. Karen Reed (Earthstar Glass) has been an art glass professional for over 40 years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Arrowmont School for Arts & Crafts and The Appalachian Center for Craft. She had been at Burritt Folk School for the last six years. Locally her work is available in Josie’s Gift Shop at Burritt on the Mountain and in The Huntsville Art League (Lowe Mill) \n \nSupplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. She has taught hand-building clay and pottery painting classes as well as glass fusing for several years. Sakiori is a\ntraditional Japanese technique that gives new life to worn garments by cutting them into narrow\nstrips and weaving them into vibrant\, textured fabric. In this class\, students will learn how to\nprepare old clothing for weaving\, set up a frame loom\, and create a one-of-a-kind woven piece\nusing repurposed materials. Perfect for beginners and fiber enthusiasts alike\, this workshop\ncombines history\, creativity\, and eco-conscious making. \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local weaver Emily Wallace. Emily has been teaching weaving\, spinning\, and other fiber arts to the public for  over 10 years. She previously owned a yarn shop in Hartselle\, AL and has taught various workshops at several yarn shops and studios. She  currently has a weaving studio at Lowe Mill Arts (studio #311) where she teaches and sells handwoven items. Concert begins at 7:30 pm. \nHuntsville’s In the Mood is a traditional 21-piece Glenn Miller-style big band based in Huntsville\, Alabama. The band formed with a mission of keeping the legacy of Glenn Miller alive\, and to help introduce newer audiences to the wonderful popular music from the big band era\, played by local musicians. The band strives to reproduce the quality and authenticity of the greats from the 1940s and 1950s\, including Benny Goodman\, Frank Sinatra\, and Bobby Darin. “Our music is great for people of all ages. You can register for that class here and here. \nInstructor:  This class will be taught by local artist and Burritt Folk School Principle Instructor\, Karen Reed. Karen Reed (Earthstar Glass) has been an art glass professional for over 40 years. Her work has been purchased for private collections in several countries\, was requested for Christmas display at The White House\, and is carried in galleries in several states. She has been a published\, contributing editor for GLASS Craftsman magazine for 13 years.  She has also written for : International Guild of Glass Artist’s publication: Common Ground Glass\, Glass Art\, Fired Arts\, The Crafts Report and the e-magazine artglassinfo.com  Teaching is a major component of Karen’s work and she has previously taught at folk schools in nine states including John C.
