Guided by our staff — and inspired by the wildlife that lives on and around the mountain — children will investigate clues\, notice patterns in nature\, and learn how animals move through the landscape in search of food\, shelter\, and safe places to rest. With plenty of fresh air\, open spaces for games\, and time to make new friends\, campers will enjoy a balanced mix of exploration\, hands-on crafts\, and active play each day. NALZS will bring their reptile ambassadors Apollo\, the king snake\, Million\, an African Pygmy hedgehog\, Twickenham\, a Sulcata tortoise\, and Squirtle a yellow-bellied slider turtle. Beth Girard will bring her menagerie of reptiles\, including a legless lizard\, a blue-tongue skink\, a terrestrial non-tortoise turtle\, and an aquatic turtle. A live animal menagerie brings the learning to life\, giving every child a front‑row seat to real reptiles and other fascinating creepy crawlies in action. DESCRIPTION:Deadline to Register: August 8th at 5:00pm \nTitle: Ceramics: “Face Mugs” \nDescription: As a traditional pottery form\, face jugs have a long history\, from pre-Columbian America\, ancient Greece\, and medieval Europe\, as well as Africa. The distinctive face jugs of the American south originated in the early 1800s\, developed from African art forms\, and served multiple purposes from practical (carrying water or other liquids) to spiritual (serving as grave markers) to self-identification. In this class\, you will carry on this tradition by creating your own distinctive face vessel using pre-made wheel-thrown mug forms. No prior experience is needed in working with clay.  We will have a glazing session on Sunday September 6th. \nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA.
