Makers on the Mountain

Introducing a NEW series in our Historic Park!
Makers on the Mountain

A series of demonstrations of historic skills and crafts in our Historic Park.

Summer/Fall 2024 Saturday Series

August 3, 10am-2pm – Papermaking with Plants

Papermaking will be demonstrated using kudzu leaves (with kudzu likely planted by Dr. Burritt and harvested here on the mountain).

August 17, 10am-2pm – Wheel Throwing Pottery

Watch as ceramic pieces are made using a 19th century style kick wheel in the Potter’s Shed.

August 31, 10am-2pm – Basket Weaving and Cordage Making with Invasive Plants

The ancient method of creating rope and cordage using wild harvested plants and vines will be demonstrated.  Handmade cordage is a versatile and beautiful way of using up unwanted plant material that can then be woven into basketry or used for a wide variety of craft purposes.

September 14, 10am-2pm – Plant ID Walks

Walk around the Historic Park and along the woodland trails to learn about wild and native plants and their different uses with a Burritt staff member.

September 28, 10am-2pm – Fabric Dyeing with Botanicals

Assorted nuts, barks and other botanical material will be used to demonstrate the process of dyeing wool and fabric with natural materials.

October 12, 10am-2pm – Gourd Carving

Just in time for Halloween, we will demonstrate traditional carving with gourds, turnips, pumpkins & watermelons.

October 26 – Braided Rug Making

We will hopefully be completing 2 unfinished braided rugs and begin the process of preparing scrap material for future rugs.

November 9, 10am-2pm – Candle Making and Dipping

Burritt staff members will demonstrate candle dipping. We will also have some molds available. If time allows, we will do some candle pours as well.
