Deadline to Register: February 12th at 5:00pm
Description: This Saturday beginner wheel throwing workshop will cover the basics of shaping clay using an electric pottery wheel. Your instructor will guide you through the essential steps of creating a wheel thrown vessel.
Please keep in mind that throwing on the pottery wheel is a skill that can take many years to master. This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty and see what wheel throwing is all about. Participants will have the option to keep one to two of your creations to be fired and glazed.
Please note: During a second session (March 6th, 1:00-2:00 pm) after the pieces are bisque fired and lasting about one hour, you will apply a glaze of your choice. The finished pieces will be ready for pick-up within two weeks of the class date.
*There are many variables during the drying and firing process and pieces can crack or even explode. While we make every effort to ensure your work will be a success, these variables make it impossible to guarantee your work will survive, but thus is the life of a potter.
Instructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website, Nascent Pottery.
