Title: Ceramics: “Beginning Pottery Wheel Series”

Description:  Pottery making is an ancient craft and art, with the first wheel-thrown pottery made thousands of years ago to create utilitarian and artistic vessels. Over the course of this 4 week class, using a modern electric pottery wheel, you will learn the time-tested basics of shaping clay, as your instructor guides you through the essential steps of creating a wheel-thrown vessel.  After making your form (bowl, cup, etc), it will be bisque-fired, and you will then apply a glaze of the color of your choice. Be prepared to get muddy as you make your very own unique wheel-thrown creation.

*There are many variables during the drying and firing process, and pieces can crack or even explode. While we make every effort to ensure your work will be a success, these variables make it impossible to guarantee your work will survive but this is the life of a potter.

Instructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta, GA. You may see examples of Paul’s work on his website, Nascent Pottery.

Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Students should wear close-toed shoes.

Time: Saturday, April 25 (1:00-5:00), Saturday May 2nd (1:00-5:00), Saturday May 9th (1:00-5:00), Saturday May 16th (1-5)
