Title: Wood-working: “An Introduction to Spoon Carving”

Description: In this course, students will learn the joy of spoon carving. Wooden spoons can be carved by hand with a few simple tools and wood gathered from your yard.  By learning a few straight-forward techniques like knife grips and spoon design, you’ll be able to make your own spoons for cooking, eating, decoration, or gifts.  We will also explore various decoration techniques such as Kohlrosing (tattooing designs on the wood), watercoloring, milk-paint decoration, and chip carving techniques to add to the charm of your wooden spoons. All spoons are carved with freshly-cut green wood using hand tools like a carving axe, a curved “hook knife” and a Sloyd knife.  We will also learn how to sharpen and maintain these tools.

Please note: Tools and material for use during the course provided, but students will be directed where to buy these tools for their own use if they want to do so after the course.

Instructor: In addition to having twenty years of teaching experience, Nathaniel Gee has a true passion for wooden spoon carving and loves to share this skill with others. He practices and teaches Welsh forms and Swedish style spoon carving. He also incorporates bent-branch and crank style methods into his own craft and instruction. He enjoys adding decorative carving and painting methods to his finished projects to create unique pieces that are both attractive and functional. Nathaniel currently resides in Huntsville, Alabama where he teaches literature (and sometimes spoon carving!) at Randolph School.

Supplies and Attire: All materials and supplies will be provided. Students should wear close-toed shoes and clothes that can get a bit dusty. Some hand strength is required for this workshop.

Time: Saturday, May 13th  (9:00am – 2:30pm)

If a cancellation is requested 14 to 29 days from a class date, a refund of half the total price can be issued. No refunds will be issued less than 14 days from the start date of a class.*  To be fair and consistent, there can be no exceptions to this policy, regardless for the reason a cancelation is requested.

*We require a minimum number of students to hold a class. If this minimum is not met, the class may be canceled or rescheduled. In this case, a full refund will be offered.
