Over the course of this 4 week class, using a modern electric pottery wheel, you will learn the time-tested basics of shaping clay, as your instructor guides you through the essential steps of creating a wheel-thrown vessel.

This class introduces students to the art of spinning yarn using a drop spindle. Participants will learn the fundamentals of fiber preparation, drafting, and spinning to create their own handspun yarn.
Discover the ancient art of transforming plants into rope. For thousands of years, people around the world relied on natural fibers—like iris leaves, daffodil stems, and even kudzu—to create strong, durable cordage for daily life. Join us as we explore this traditional skill using plants gathered right here on the mountain. Guests are welcome to roll up their sleeves and try their hand at twisting their own cordage alongside our demonstrators. Happening from 10:00-11:30am and from 1:00-2:30pm. This activity is free for Burritt members or included with general admission.
Come and spend some time with us learning how to play the bodhran (Irish traditional frame drum). This class will teach you how to hold the drum, how to hold the tipper (drum stick), and how to play some simple rhythmic patterns. No experience necessary.
May is Preservation Month, and there is no better time to take a closer look at the buildings that define Burritt’s Historic Park. Join us for special Architectural Tours that go beyond the surface to explore how these structures were built, how they were used, and why they matter today. From hand-hewn logs and original construction techniques to the stories of the people who lived and worked in these spaces, these tours offer a deeper understanding of everyday life in 19th-century North Alabama.

One of the oldest and simplest forms of lighting, rush light candles and holders have been in common use since before the rise of the Roman Empire and continued to be used in rural parts of Britain and America well into the 20th century.
With this class, we learn the basics of starting a coiled pine needle basket. You will be able to make a start on a basket and continue at home or make a small creation and finish it off during the class. We will cover all the basics and if you decide to continue after the class you will be sent home with some supplies until you can obtain more.

From 10:00 to 3:00, plein-air easels stocked with paper and soft pastels will be set up throughout the grounds, ready for anyone who wishes to draw from nature in a peaceful, welcoming environment. Plein-air (“open air”) painting and drawing have a rich history stretching back centuries. Artists around the world have long stepped outside their studios to capture light, color, and landscape directly from life.
Tim Martin is a North Alabama artisan whose craftsmanship reflects his lifelong immersion in woodworking. With a style that blends deeply rooted traditional techniques with sculptural artistry and historical craftsmanship, Tim’s chairs marry traditional Appalachian craftsmanship through his meticulous hand-tool joinery and historical construction techniques with his artist’s sensibility for sculptural form. Each piece stands as a unique, functional work of art that honors both legacy and aesthetic expression. Join us for a Makers Day with Reed Carpenter of Carpenter Carpentry as he demonstrates traditional pen making in front of the Eddins and Chandler Houses in the Historic Park from 10:00-3:00pm. Using a handheld lathe and finely selected hardwoods, Reed transforms simple wood blanks into beautifully crafted writing instruments while sharing insights into turning techniques, tool selection, and the artistry behind functional woodcraft. Visitors are invited to stop by, watch the process up close, and learn how precision, patience, and creativity come together in this engaging demonstration.
